So there I am in the shower this morning, rinsing the shampoo out of my hair, when suddenly, all the lights go out. Thankfully there is a window in my bathroom, so I wasn't stuck in the pitch black.
Now, there have been workman working outside of my building for the past three weeks, building new landings. As I'm standing there rinsing, I hear a huge BANG! and then the lights go out. My immediate cause-and-effect instinct kicks in, and I think "The workmen knocked out the lights!"
Then immediately I thought of all those slasher flicks that begin with some poor hot blond girl being murdered in the shower, and I got really freaked out that there was a chainsaw wielding maniac outside my bathroom. Then I remembered that I'm not blond or seventeen, and that I am therefore not likely to get my throat slashed by some crazy man with an Oedipal complex.
When you think about it, being in the shower is a very vulnerable time. You're naked, and you can't hear anyone sneaking around over the sound of the water.
Unless they knock out your power. Once I decided I wasn't about to be filleted, I got out of the shower, noting that the normally chatty workman were rather quiet. I threw on some makeup - no drying hair today! and then got dressed. As I'm about to leave, I hear banging outside my back door. So I open the back door and one of the workmen is there.
So I ask "What happened to the power?"
He looks at me for a moment, then: "No power."
"Yes, I see there's no power. When will it be fixed?"
"No English."
Aw, crap. I look outside, but it looks like this guy is alone. "Fix power?" I try.
"No power."
I try again. "How long, no power?"
He points down to the walkway between the buildings, then throws his arms in the air. "Big boom!" Shakes his head. "No power."
Ok, yes, I got that much. I give up, nodding at him and then shutting the door.
I currently have half a pint of ice cream that I've been resisting most of the week, melting in my fridge. I should have ate it for breakfast.
