The Vatican can blow it out their ass

Apparently, the Vatican issued a statement "forgiving" John Lennon for the infamous statement he made back in 1966 that the "Beatles were bigger than Jesus." The Vatican apparently decided that the statement was forgivable, because, with the passage of time, it "sounds only like a 'boast' by a young working-class Englishman faced with unexpected success."

How big of you guys. It's unfortunate that you aren't aware of the statements Lennon made at the time of the uproar, in which he clarified his remarks because he meant that it was sad that more kids cared about the Beatles, or were more interested in the Beatles, than in Jesus. Lennon wasn't boasting, he was lamenting the falling place of religion, you self-indulgent toads.

Well, what is interesting to me about this is that the "forgiveness" was granted by Osservatore Romano, the "semi official newspaper of the Vatican", which really makes me wonder where the original statement came from. The mystery of this particular newspaper is that it has a lot of editors but I can't really tell where the articles germinate. I mean, I don't think it was stated as an official statement of the Pope--or am I reading it wrong?
